On August 26th I got a phone call saying my sister in law was in labor and invited me to go down to Tucson to be apart of it all. Like the baby that I am, I immediately started crying! I had her in the delivery room for Porter and she told me what a neat experience it was, but I had no idea she was even considering letting anyone be there with her except my brother. I hurried and got ready and waited for my mom to pick me up.
Not having much communication with my brother or Alisa we were really surprised they wanted us to go straight to the hospital. We thought it would be hours before she had the twins. Halfway into our drive down I text my brother and find out they are still at home and haven't even left for the hospital yet. My mom and I discuss how we will probably stop by the hospital, say hi, then go back to the house and hangout with the older kids until she got closer to delivering. As we approach the exit we text one last time saying home or hospital, and Robbie responds "hospital. now".
We pull up to the hospital and it's literally empty. There is no one at the front desk, just two cleaning people. So we wonder around and find a nurse that looks Alisa up. She's not even in the system yet so she calls over to triage and says she is over there and walks us over. As soon as we turn the corner I hear my sister in law dying in pain, fully clothed in a regular curtained off triage area. Not a room, not a private place, just in the middle of the admitting area. There are probably ten nurses and doctors running around like crazy, trying to help my sister in law, as I turn my head and realize one of the twins was already born.
With no epidural, no iv, zero drugs, horrible back labor and hard contractions nurses are running around trying to contact her doctor, and fill for baby number two. There was so much chaos and such a panic it was literally out of control. They couldn't find her head, they couldn't get a heartbeat, and they couldn't get an epidural into Alisa. Next thing I know Alisa is being rushed into the operating room for an emergency c-section. Her doctor is running down the hall, ripping her shirt off putting scrubs on. It was straight out of a scene from Grey's.
My mom and I stay behind with baby A, Addison, and within a few minutes Rob joins us. Alisa had to be put completely under and Robbie was kicked out of the room. A few minutes later baby B, Aliva is brought into the nursery and the Dr explains that she was trying to come out with a foot and hand first (like the shape of a letter C). It was the craziest experience I have ever been apart of.
For several hours Alisa was still out of it, but we were able to sit with her in the room and watch the babies get weighed, measured, bathed, etc. It was such an overwhelming emotional time, as the morning events were a roller coaster. I couldn't believe how amazing my sister in law is. As things settled down, we learned that those cleaning people were actually cleaning up Alisa's water, and that baby A was delivered in the hall while standing up, fully clothed in a skirt.
Too busy carrying for her other three kids and getting them ready to go to church with the babysitter, she didn't even realize how close together her contractions were until she got in the car and started to make the 20 minute drive to the hospital. By the time she got to the hospital her contractions were a minute apart. Still not too worried because her water hadn't broke, she thought it would be a few hours before any pushing began. Not the case, she literally walked into the hospital and delivered baby A within minutes (so lucky it didn't happen in the car), and unfortunately had to have the emergency c section with baby B.
Alisa is wonder woman! Seriously amazing! A woman's body is incredible and I seem to find new appreciation for it everyday. I officially want to become an L&D nurse, like so bad. It's my dream job! Witnessing new life enter into this world is the most amazing experience you could imagine. The love and spirit is so tangible. Now more then ever I want to see my sisters and close friends give birth!!! Hahaha, seriously.... Chareese you don't have an option, Amanda, I will let you warm up to the idea, haha just kidding. I am so intrigued and interested in it all. The human body is amazing. New life is beautiful. And my sister in law Alisa is my idol!!
